Connacht kept our playoff hopes alive with a commanding 26-7 victory over our interprovincial rivals Munster at a raucous Sportsground today. Our boys set the tone early, showcasing relentless patience near the try line; after being held up twice by a desperate Munster defense, scrum-half Be n Murphy finally sniped over for the opening score. Sam Gilbert added the extras to give us a 7-0 lead after 12 minutes. The momentum swung further in Connacht’s favor following a TMO check for a “crock roll,” which resulted in a yellow card and off field review upgrade to a red card for Munster’s Diarmuid Barron, leaving the visitors a man down for the next 20 minutes, effectively up to halftime.

Capitalizing on the numerical advantage, Connacht widened the gap through winger Shane Bolton, who crossed the whitewash to make it 12-0 after a missed conversion. The pressure remained suffocating, and by the 34th minute, “Moose” Shamus Hurley-Langton powered over for a third try. With the conversion successfully nailed by Sam Gilbert, Connacht headed into the sheds with a formidable 19-0 lead at half-time, leaving Munster with a mountain to climb. To their credit, Munster emerged for the second half with renewed intensity. Despite enjoying sustained periods of pressure, they found themselves repeatedly frustrated by a resolute Connacht wall. It took until the 68th minute for the deadlock to break when Craig Casey spotted a gap to snipe over, with JJ Hanrahan adding the conversion to bring the score to 19-7. However, any hopes of a Munster comeback were short-lived.

Connacht responded almost instantly through Man of the Match Sean Jansen, whose powerful finish—and the subsequent conversion by Gilbert—put the result beyond any doubt. The final whistle confirmed a vital bonus-point win for Connacht, a result that moves us firmly into the post-season conversation. While the performance was a statement of intent, the squad now faces a nervous wait as other results across the league filter in to determine if we have done enough to secure a spot in the top eight. For Munster, the game was summed up in the post match press conference by Clayton McMillian when he said the intensity Connacht brought was not matched by his boys. Their focus will switch quickly to next week’s must win game and Craig Casey backed this up saying he expects a reaction from his teammates following this defeat. Connacht remain 9th in spite of the BP win and we also face a must win away game if we are to progress to the top 8. With the way Connacht are improving game on game it seems possible.
